Second Week of Lent

 

  

2^nd Week of Lent.  Transfiguration

Fr. Malloy’s Midweek Message.  March 8, 2023

Friends,

Could you imagine a political candidate being visited by George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and being told he or she is the chosen one?  Or Martin Luther King, Jr., having Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas communicate God’s pleasure with his work on behalf of Civil Rights?  Or maybe just an experience of an ancestor who communicates to us that we are on the right track in discipling a recalcitrant teenager?

This is something like what happened to Jesus on the mountain when Moses and Elijah appeared to him.  They were giving confirmation about what Jesus was doing in his ministry of preaching and healing.  Jesus knew now that this all was heading toward confrontation with the religious and political authorities of his day.  He knew the cross was coming.  And he warned his disciples. 

Peter, James and John were confirmed and strengthened in their commitment to Jesus and one another as they heard the voice from the cloud proclaim, This is my Beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.  Listen to him! (Matthew 17:5).

The transfiguration lets us know that we too are beloved daughters and sons of God.  We, like Peter and James and John are called to follow Jesus.  We are called to carry the crosses of our days and trust in resurrection. 

We are called to listen to Jesus.  What is Jesus saying to us these days of Lent?

He is inviting us to pray.  To cry out to God for those suffering in the Ukraine war; for those suffering on our southern border, La Frontera; for those suffering in the aftermath of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria; for those suffering in places in the USA that are recovering from the drastic effects of climate change’s destructive weather; for those suffering violence in our cities and streets.

He is inviting us to give alms, to send assistance to those in dire straits.

He is inviting us to fast, to refrain from what fills us with inconsequential thoughts and feelings.  We fast in order to make space in our minds and hearts and souls for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, leading us to carry the cross like Jesus.  Our bearing the cross cooperates with Jesus in his saving our world from all despair, destruction, and death. 

This Lent we once again prepare for Holy Week and Easter.  Let us listen to Jesus.

Amigos y Amigas,

¿Se imagina que un candidato político recibiera la visita de George Washington y Abraham Lincoln y le dijeran que es el elegido?  ¿O que a Martin Luther King, Jr. Harriet Tubman y Frederick Douglas le comunicasen el agrado de Dios por su labor en favor de los derechos civiles?  ¿O tal vez la experiencia de un antepasado que nos comunica que vamos por buen camino al discipular a un adolescente recalcitrante?

Es algo parecido a lo que le ocurrió a Jesús en la montaña cuando se le aparecieron Moisés y Elías.  Estaban confirmando lo que Jesús estaba haciendo en su ministerio de predicación y curación.  Jesús sabía ahora que todo esto se encaminaba hacia la confrontación con las autoridades religiosas y políticas de su tiempo.  Sabía que se acercaba la cruz.  Y advirtió a sus discípulos. 

Pedro, Santiago y Juan fueron confirmados y fortalecidos en su compromiso con Jesús y entre ellos cuando oyeron la voz de la nube que proclamaba: Este es mi Hijo, el Amado; este es mi Elijido.  ¡Escuchenleo! (Mateo 17:5).

La transfiguración nos hace saber que también nosotros somos hijas e hijos amados de Dios.  Nosotros, como Pedro, Santiago y Juan, estamos llamados a seguir a Jesús.  Estamos llamados a cargar con las cruces de nuestros días y a confiar en la resurrección. 

Estamos llamados a escuchar a Jesús.  ¿Qué nos está diciendo Jesús estos días de cuaresma?

Nos invita a rezar.  A clamar a Dios por los que sufren en la guerra de Ucrania; por los que sufren en nuestra frontera sur, La Frontera; por los que sufren tras los terremotos de Turquía y Siria; por los que sufren en lugares de Estados Unidos que se recuperan de los drásticos efectos destructivos del cambio climático; por los que sufren la violencia en nuestras ciudades y calles.

Nos invita a dar limosna, a enviar ayuda a quienes se encuentran en una situación desesperada.

Nos invita a ayunar, a abstenernos de lo que nos llena de pensamientos y sentimientos intrascendentes.  Ayunamos para dejar espacio en nuestras mentes, corazones y almas a la inspiración del Espíritu Santo, que nos lleva a llevar la cruz como Jesús.  Nuestro llevar la cruz coopera con Jesús en su salvación de nuestro mundo de toda desesperación, destrucción, y muerte. 

En esta Cuaresma nos preparamos de nuevo para la Semana Santa y la Pascua.  Escuchemos a Jesús.
