Friends,
The Catholic
Church teaches that all human life is sacred and must be protected. The Keystone of Catholic Social Teaching is
the Dignity of the Human Person. All
persons have the right to be respected by all, especially by the laws of the
state. This teaching about the dignity
of the human person enlightens moral choices concerning issues such as the
death penalty, euthanasia, abortion, a living wage, war, and a whole number of
matters pertaining to biochemical manipulation of human life from stem cell research
to cloning. The Catholic Bishops state: “We believe that every person is precious, that people are
more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is
whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.”
Following
the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, much is being debated about the issues
concerning abortion. As a Catholic and
Jesuit school, it is good to know the Catholic church’s teaching on the dignity
of human life. Everyone has a right to
their body. That includes unborn
children. One has a right to one’s body
while in the womb of their mother.
The Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, teach that we must defend
the most vulnerable among us.
“As we Jesuits survey our culture, we
cannot help but see abortion as part of the massive injustices in our society.
A spirit of callous disregard for life shows itself in direct assaults on human
life such as abortion and capital punishment. There are less direct but equally
senseless ways we undermine life, through violence, racism, xenophobia, and the
growing inequality of wealth and education. We also seek justice in ensuring
that pregnant women and mothers have the resources they need to care for their children
and live full lives. These realities compel us to speak out in defense of life
and human flourishing.”
On April 26, 2023, a panel of five women testified before congress
on the issues surrounding abortion. Both pro-choice and pro-life views where
shared. Dr.
Monique Chireau Wubbenhorst. (pictured in the upper left photo) an OB GYN doctor, eloquently and forcefully spoke in
defense of unborn children. Her
testimony begins at minute 35. https://www.c-span.org/video/?527656-1/senate-judiciary-hearing-texas-abortion-pill-ruling . She notes the racial disparities among “abortion rates, abortion mortality, and non-abortion related
maternal mortality, between black and white women.” Sadly, here too, systemic racism threatens
lives.
Dr.
Wubbenhorst testified (her remarks are edited here. See the video above for her full discourse)
“Abortion
not only poses risks to the mother; it is also by definition always lethal to
an embryo or fetus, an unborn child, a human being, a member of the human
family, not a clump of cells or potential child, but a child assuming the human
form. Abortion’s goal is to kill that human being. It neither treats nor
prevents any disease and is therefore not health care. This is reinforced by
the fact that the majority of OB GYN 's do not perform abortions. Studies show
that the percentage that do is declining and has been for decades, from a high
of 40% in 1985 to between 7% and 24% at present. …
Since Roe v Wade an estimated 17 million
unborn African Americans have been aborted in the United States, which is more
than the populations of the countries of Senegal and Cambodia respectfully, and
slightly less than the entire population of the Netherlands. This means the deaths of not only the 17
million black people who were aborted, but all their descendants, their
families hopes and dreams. Annually,
approximately 300,000 black women undergo abortion every year, while in 2021
there were approximately 518,000 births to black women. A number that continues
to decline.
There are substantial racial disparities in
abortion rates, abortion mortality, and non-abortion related maternal
mortality, between black and white women.
38% of abortions occur in black women.
A rate which is 2 to 3 times higher than that of white women, even
though we compromise only 12% to 14% of the total US population. An estimated 684 black children are aborted
every day. African American women also
have a two to three times higher mortality rate from abortion compared with
white women. Therefore, black women have
the highest rates of abortion and the highest rates of maternal mortality. Both
of these facts cannot be true if abortion reduces maternal mortality.”
Choices
surrounding these matters are often difficult.
As Pope Francis says, we must do much more to accompany and help women
and men who, in distress, see abortion as their only alternative. We must remember that the one who teaches
“Thou shall not kill” (Matthew 19:18) also counsels “Thou shall not judge (Matthew
7:1). As we continue to investigate and
learn about the issues of life, may God guide us to all truth and loving
choices. May we always protect the
vulnerable among us.

La Iglesia Católica enseña que toda vida
humana es sagrada y debe ser protegida.
La piedra angular de la doctrina social católica es la dignidad de la
persona humana. Todas las personas
tienen derecho a ser respetadas por todos, especialmente por las leyes del
Estado. Esta enseñanza sobre la dignidad
de la persona humana ilumina las opciones morales relativas a cuestiones como
la pena de muerte, la eutanasia, el aborto, el salario digno, la guerra y toda
una serie de asuntos relacionados con la manipulación bioquímica de la vida
humana, desde la investigación con células madre hasta la clonación. Los obispos católicos afirman: "Creemos que cada persona es preciosa, que las personas
son más importantes que las cosas, y que la medida de cada institución es si
amenaza o mejora la vida y la dignidad de la persona humana".
Tras la decisión de Dobbs del Tribunal Supremo,
se está debatiendo mucho sobre las cuestiones relativas al aborto. Como colegio católico y jesuita, es bueno
conocer la enseñanza de la Iglesia católica sobre la dignidad de la vida
humana. Toda persona tiene derecho a su
cuerpo. Eso incluye a los niños no
nacidos. Uno tiene derecho a su cuerpo
mientras está en el vientre de su madre.
La Compañía de Jesús enseña que debemos defender a los más
vulnerables entre nosotros.
"Cuando los jesuitas examinamos nuestra cultura, no podemos evitar ver el
aborto como parte de las injusticias masivas de nuestra sociedad. Un espíritu
de cruel desprecio por la vida se manifiesta en ataques directos a la vida
humana como el aborto y la pena capital. Hay formas menos directas pero
igualmente insensatas de socavar la vida, a través de la violencia, el racismo,
la xenofobia y la creciente desigualdad de riqueza y educación. También
buscamos la justicia garantizando que las mujeres embarazadas y las madres
dispongan de los recursos necesarios para cuidar de sus hijos y vivir una vida
plena. Estas realidades nos obligan a pronunciarnos en defensa de la vida y el
florecimiento humano."
El 26 de abril de 2023, un grupo de cinco
mujeres testificó ante el Congreso sobre cuestiones relacionadas con el
aborto. Se compartieron puntos de vista
tanto a favor del aborto como a favor de la vida. La Dra. Monique Chireau Wubbenhorst. (en la foto superior izquierda), ginecóloga y obstetra, habló con elocuencia

Señala las disparidades raciales entre "tasas de aborto, mortalidad
por aborto y mortalidad materna no relacionada con el aborto, entre mujeres blancas
y negras". Lamentablemente, también
en este caso el racismo sistémico amenaza vidas.
La Dra. Wubbenhorst testificó (sus comentarios

"El
aborto no sólo supone riesgos para la madre; también es, por definición,
siempre letal para un embrión o feto, un niño no nacido, un ser humano, un
miembro de la familia humana, no un grupo de células o un niño en potencia,
sino un niño que asume la forma humana. El objetivo del aborto es matar a ese
ser humano. No trata ni previene ninguna enfermedad y, por tanto, no es
asistencia sanitaria. Esto se ve reforzado por el hecho de que la mayoría de
los ginecólogos obstetras no practican abortos. Los estudios muestran que el
porcentaje que lo hace está disminuyendo y así ha sido durante décadas, desde
un máximo del 40% en 1985 a entre el 7% y el 24% en la actualidad. ...
Desde
el caso Roe contra Wade, se calcula que 17 millones de afroamericanos no
nacidos han sido abortados en Estados Unidos, lo que supone más que la
población de los países de Senegal y Camboya, respectivamente, y algo menos que
toda la población de los Países Bajos.
Esto significa la muerte no sólo de los 17 millones de personas negras
que fueron abortadas, sino de todos sus descendientes, las esperanzas y los
sueños de sus familias. Anualmente,
aproximadamente 300.000 mujeres negras se someten a abortos cada año, mientras
que en 2021 hubo aproximadamente 518.000 nacimientos de mujeres negras. Una
cifra que sigue disminuyendo.
Existen
disparidades raciales sustanciales en las tasas de aborto, mortalidad por
aborto y mortalidad materna no relacionada con el aborto, entre mujeres negras
y blancas. El 38% de los abortos se
producen en mujeres negras. Una tasa que
es de 2 a 3 veces superior a la de las mujeres blancas, a pesar de que sólo
comprometemos entre el 12% y el 14% de la población total de Estados
Unidos. Se calcula que cada día se
abortan 684 niños negros. Las mujeres
afroamericanas también tienen una tasa de mortalidad por aborto de dos a tres
veces superior a la de las mujeres blancas.
Por lo tanto, las mujeres negras tienen las tasas más altas de aborto y
las tasas más altas de mortalidad materna. Ambos hechos no pueden ser ciertos
si el aborto reduce la mortalidad materna".
Las decisiones en torno a estas cuestiones
suelen ser difíciles. Como dice el Papa
Francisco, debemos hacer mucho más para acompañar y ayudar a las mujeres y
hombres que, angustiados, ven en el aborto su única alternativa. Debemos recordar que el que enseña "No
matarás" (Mateo 19:18) también aconseja "No juzgarás" (Mateo
7:1). Mientras seguimos investigando y
aprendiendo sobre las cuestiones de la vida, que Dios nos guíe hacia la verdad
y hacia opciones amorosas. Que
protejamos siempre a los más vulnerables.
